Where, when and how?

The optics lab is located in Room 207 of the Natural Science Building. Access to this room is through the hallway door, and through the computer room at the end of the hall. Most student assistants and all faculty have keys to this area, which must be locked at all times. Professor Kielkopf will be in the lab Wednesday afternoon at 3 pm, and at other times as needed by prior arrangement. Everyone should try to come to the lab at that time every week to keep up to date on the available experiments.

This will be an open lab, which means that you may work at your own pace, (subject to certain non-procrastination requirements listed below) and when at any time during the term. However, the Holography experiment should be done under supervision. Prof. Kielkopf is available at

kielkopf@louisville.edu
or during the the Wednesday afternoon meeting.

You should try to complete an experiment every other week. Do not procrastinate to the end of the semester! If you do you can expect major difficulties. We require a certain steady amount of work, and in any rolling one week period, only two labs will be accepted for credit. This semester the absolute deadline to turn in any work is April 25, but since we may ask you to revise reports, in fact the real final deadline for work is a few days earlier. If you are going to procrastinate, you still must start before the middle of February in order to get them all finished in time.

The number of experiments and reports you do will determine your grade as follows: students in Physics 356 should satisfactorily complete 7 experiments and reports to get an A, 6 to get a B, and so on. The quality of the work as reported is most important, and you may be asked to amend your work before it will be accepted for credit.
